Chirp is a legitimate audiobook store run by the team behind BookBub, and it is the cheapest way to buy audiobooks one at a time if you are flexible about which ones. There is no subscription and no membership fee: you pay per book, mostly during limited-time deals, and the book stays in your library. The catch is that you buy what is on sale, not necessarily what you need, and the audio only plays inside Chirp's own app, web player and Alexa skill. It is available only in the United States and Canada.
How does Chirp work?
Chirp is a store, not a library or a subscription. Its help center says joining is free, "there aren't any membership fees, and you'll only be charged for the audiobooks you choose to purchase." The homepage advertises "thousands of audiobook deals starting at $1" and says the same audiobook costs "75% less than the cost of a credit."
The deals are the product. Chirp sends daily or weekly emails with discounted titles in the genres you pick, and the website lists current limited-time sales. Chirp's author help page says it is "powered by the same team behind BookBub," and authors and publishers book those promotions through BookBub Partners. That explains the selection: a deal exists because a publisher paid to run one, not because the book is what you were looking for.
Two practical details trip up new users. You cannot buy inside the app. Chirp's help center says "it's not possible to search our website or purchase audiobooks using the Chirp app," so you buy on chirpbooks.com and the book appears in the app afterwards. And Chirp bills once a day: several purchases on the same card in one day become a single charge.
Is Chirp legit?
Yes. Chirp's about page says it is "owned and operated by the same people who started BookBub," the ebook deal newsletter that has run since 2012. The homepage claims "millions of Chirp customers" and more than 50,000 five-star app reviews. The low prices come from publisher-funded promotions, not from anything grey: the books are licensed, and you get them in Chirp's official apps.
The one review in the current results that says returns are "generally not possible" is wrong, and the actual rule is below.
What does Chirp cost compared with Audible?
Chirp has no fixed price because it has no plan. You pay the deal price per title, and outside a deal some books sell at or near full retail. Chirp publishes no total catalog size, only "thousands" of deals at a time.
Audible's help center, checked October 15, 2026, lists Audible Standard at $8.99 a month and Audible Premium at $14.95 for one credit or $22.95 for two, with annual plans at $149.50 for 12 credits and $229.50 for 24. New members have not been able to join Audible Plus since March 3, 2026.
The arithmetic is simple. If the books you want go on sale on Chirp for a few dollars, Chirp is far cheaper than a $14.95 credit. If you want a specific new release this month, Chirp may not have a deal on it, and Audible's credit covers a book of any price. Audible also has its exclusives and Originals, which no other store sells.
Can you get a refund on Chirp?
Yes, within limits. Chirp's return policy says it will refund a purchase "as long as we receive the request within 45 days of your purchase date and you haven't listened to a significant portion of the audiobook's content." You request it through the contact form, and the money goes back to the original payment method. Chirp does not exchange books, and gifted books are non-refundable.
Every Chirp book also has a short sample on its page, so you can hear the narrator before you buy.
Do you own Chirp audiobooks?
You own access, not a file. Chirp's help center says "once you've purchased an audiobook from Chirp, it's yours to keep," and purchases are tied to your email address, so deleting the app loses nothing. But the format page is explicit about the limits: Chirp audiobooks "aren't available on CD or as MP3 files," and "it isn't possible to download Chirp audiobooks outside of the Chirp app, such as to a computer, USB drive, or SD card."
A few more rules from the same help center:
- Purchases cannot be shared between Chirp accounts. Apple Family Sharing covers the app, not the books in it.
- You cannot permanently delete a book from your library, only archive it.
- Downloads go to the phone's internal storage; Android SD cards are not supported.
This is the same arrangement Audible uses, so it is not a reason to prefer one over the other. If you want a file you can move, the store to look at is in Libro.fm vs Audible, where purchases come as DRM-free MP3 or M4B.
Where can you listen to Chirp?
On more devices than the older reviews say. According to Chirp's help center:
- Phones and tablets: the Chirp app for iOS and Android, with offline downloads.
- Computers: the web player at chirpbooks.com on a Mac or PC, which also works on Amazon Fire tablets.
- Smart speakers: a Chirp skill for Alexa, with voice commands for playing, pausing and skipping chapters.
- Cars: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, or a cable.
Not supported: Apple Watch, casting and AirPlay. Bluetooth works for any speaker or headphones.
What is the Chirp app like for nonfiction?
It is a clean, basic player. Playback speed runs from 0.2x to 3.0x in the app and the web player. There is a sleep timer that can stop at the end of a chapter, bookmarks, an option to archive books when you finish, and listening streaks on iOS. Some audiobooks come with supplemental PDFs, such as charts or worksheets, which Chirp attaches to the purchase email.
What it lacks matters if you listen to learn. Chirp's help center describes bookmarks as a way to "save your place or flag a particular passage." It mentions no notes on a bookmark and no export, and there is no transcript. So you can mark a moment, but you cannot capture why it mattered, and nothing helps you recall the book a month later. A bookmark list on its own leads back to rereading, which feels like remembering without being it.
Who should use Chirp?
Chirp suits you if:
- You listen to a few audiobooks a year and dislike paying a subscription between them.
- You keep a wishlist. Chirp emails you when a wishlisted book gets a deal, which turns "whatever is on sale" into "what I wanted, when it is cheap."
- You live in the US or Canada.
Audible suits you better if you want a particular new release now, listen to a book or more each month, or want Audible Originals. Many people use both: credits for the books they want today, Chirp for the backlist. For other ways to buy or rent audiobooks, see Audible vs Kobo and Everand vs Audible.
How do you remember a nonfiction audiobook you bought cheaply?
A $3 book is easy to buy and easy to forget. The low price makes it tempting to stack up a backlog, and a book you finish at 2x while driving tends to leave a feeling of having read it and little you can actually recall. What helps is pausing to put an idea into your own words while it is fresh, then testing yourself later. The habits that work when your hands are busy are in how to remember what you listen to.
Graspd is our companion for that: it discusses what you have heard so far without spoiling the rest, and turns moments you mark into recaps and quizzes. It cannot import Chirp audiobooks, because Chirp does not let the audio leave its own app, and the same is true of Audible. It works with podcasts that publish a public feed and with audio files you own outright.
FAQ
Is Chirp audiobooks legit?
Yes. Chirp is run by the people who started BookBub, the ebook deal service founded in 2012. The audiobooks are licensed from publishers, and the low prices come from limited-time promotions that publishers run through BookBub Partners. You buy on chirpbooks.com and listen in Chirp's official apps.
Does Chirp have a subscription?
No. Chirp's help center says it is free to join, has no membership fees, and charges only for the audiobooks you buy. You pay per title, usually during a deal. Books you buy stay in your library whether or not you buy anything else.
Can you return a Chirp audiobook?
Yes. Chirp refunds a purchase if you ask within 45 days and have not listened to a significant portion of the book. The refund goes to the original payment method. Chirp does not exchange books, and gifted books cannot be refunded.
Can you download Chirp audiobooks as MP3?
No. Chirp says its audiobooks are not available as MP3 files or on CD, and cannot be downloaded outside the Chirp app to a computer, USB drive or SD card. You can download them for offline listening inside the app on iOS and Android.
Is Chirp available outside the US?
Only in Canada. Chirp's help center says the service is available in the United States, including US territories, and Canada. Readers elsewhere cannot sign up or buy books, and gifts can only go to recipients in those two countries.
Is Chirp better than Audible?
It is cheaper per book if you are happy to buy what is on sale. Audible is better for specific new releases, exclusives and heavy listening, since a credit covers a book of any price. Both lock the audio to their own apps, so neither lets you use the book in another tool.
