Kobo and Audible answer the same question with two different deals. Kobo Plus Listen rents you a catalog: $7.99 a month for as many of its audiobooks as you like, gone when you cancel. Audible sells you titles: a Premium credit buys one book of any length that stays in your library after you leave. Pick Kobo if you already read on a Kobo eReader, listen to a lot, and do not need the books afterwards. Pick Audible if the books you want are new releases or exclusives, or if you want to keep what you listened to.
What is the real difference between Kobo and Audible?
The ranking pages for this comparison are a Reddit thread, a Facebook group, a TikTok clip and a Kobo Plus review from 2022. Between them they mix up something Kobo itself keeps separate: Kobo sells audiobooks in two ways, and only one of them behaves like Audible.
Kobo Plus Listen is a subscription library. Kobo's help center describes Kobo Plus as reading and listening "to as many eBooks and audiobooks as you want each month for a fixed price." When you cancel, the help article on cancelling says, "You'll no longer have access to your Kobo Plus books." Nothing stays.
The Kobo audiobook subscription is a credit plan. Kobo's help center lists it for the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, France and Spain: one credit a month, exchanged for one audiobook "of any price," and the audiobooks remain in your account after you cancel. This is the product that compares directly with Audible Premium.
Audible has a matching split. Its Premium plan gives you credits to buy titles and an included catalog you can listen to while subscribed. So the honest comparison is two pairs: Kobo Plus Listen against Audible's included catalog, and Kobo's credit plan against Audible's credits.
What do Kobo and Audible cost in 2026?
Kobo's US Plus page states a 14-day free trial, then $7.99 a month for Kobo Plus Read or Kobo Plus Listen, or $9.99 for Read & Listen together, plus tax. The page blocks automated readers, so we read that text through a search index on October 13, 2026, and it matches a price tracker's March 2026 record. Kobo's help center, updated September 10, 2026, confirms the 14-day trial for US customers. Several older reviews still say 30 days.
Kobo's credit plan exists in the US, but its price was not printed on any Kobo page we could open on the run day, so we are not quoting one. Check it at checkout.
Audible changed its lineup this year. Its help center says new members cannot sign up for Audible Plus as of March 3, 2026. What remains on the web is Audible Standard at $8.99 a month, one book a month that you can keep listening to until you cancel, and Premium at $14.95 for one credit or $22.95 for two, or $149.50 and $229.50 a year for 12 and 24 credits. In the iPhone app the prices are higher: Audible's App Store listing on October 13, 2026 showed Premium Plus Monthly at $15.99, an iOS Standard Plan at $9.99, an annual plan at $159.99, and extra credits at $15.99 for one, $39.99 for three and $59.99 for five.
How big is each catalog?
Audible's App Store listing claims more than a million audiobooks and podcasts, plus Audible Originals that exist nowhere else. Kobo publishes no audiobook count for Kobo Plus Listen; a December 2025 report put it at over 150,000 audiobooks, and Kobo's help center only says the subscription library holds "hundreds of thousands" of ebooks.
That gap matters more for a subscription library than for a store. Kobo also sells audiobooks individually and by credit from its full store, but only part of that store is in Plus. Kobo's help center adds a second limit for credits: "Only eligible audiobooks show the 'Get it for 1 credit' option, not all titles are included in the credit model." Before you subscribe, search for the next three books on your list in both apps.
What happens to your credits when you cancel?
This is the rule the ranking pages leave out, and it is the clearest difference between the two credit plans.
Kobo's help center says audiobook credits "stay in your Kobo account for six months beginning from the cancellation date." You can cancel and still spend what you paid for.
Audible's help center says that if you cancel, "you'll lose access to the included catalog and any unused credits." Spend your credits before you leave, or they are gone. Another Audible-style store is stricter even while you stay subscribed: Audiobooks.com lets monthly credits expire three months after they are issued.
Titles you bought with credits stay in your account on both services. Kobo Plus books and Audible's included catalog do not.
Can you listen on a Kobo eReader?
Yes, and for anyone who already owns one this decides the question. Kobo's help center lists eight eReaders that play audiobooks: the Sage, Libra 2, Elipsa, Clara 2E, Elipsa 2E, Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW. Sound goes out over Bluetooth headphones or a speaker only, since the eReaders have no speaker of their own, and playback runs from 0.5x to 3x. Files range from about 50 MB to more than 14 GB, so a long book can push ebooks off a small device.
Outside the eReaders, Kobo audiobooks play in the Kobo Books app on Android and iOS and through Apple CarPlay. Kobo says they "cannot be played" in Kobo Desktop or "on other brands of eReaders." Audible, by contrast, runs on phones and tablets and on Alexa speakers, so its reach is wider if you do not own a Kobo.
Do you own the audio file on either service?
No, though Kobo's help center makes it sound closer than it is. One article says "Audiobooks from Kobo are in MP3 format." That describes the encoding, not what you may do with it: there is no download to a computer, and the audio plays only in Kobo's own apps and eReaders. Audible downloads are copy protected and open only in Audible's apps.
So on both services, "yours" means an entry in an account, not a file on your disk. If you want the file itself, the comparison to read is Libro.fm vs Audible, where the purchase is a DRM-free MP3 or M4B.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Kobo Plus Listen if you read on a Kobo eReader already, get through several audiobooks a month, and do not care about keeping them. At $7.99 for unlimited listening from its catalog, it is cheaper than one Audible credit, as long as the catalog has what you want.
Pick Audible Premium if you want new releases, Audible Originals, or the biggest catalog, and if you want the books to remain yours. Spend credits before you cancel.
Pick Kobo's credit plan over Audible's if you tend to pause subscriptions: the six-month window for unused credits is the friendlier rule. For the same rent-or-own choice with other services, see Everand vs Audible and Audible vs Spotify, where Spotify meters hours instead of titles.
What if you want to remember the books you listen to?
An unlimited catalog is good at one thing: getting through more books. It does nothing for keeping any of them, and listening once at speed tends to leave a familiar feeling about a book and very few ideas you can retrieve later. The habits that work while your hands are busy are in how to remember what you listen to.
Graspd is our audiobook and podcast companion: it discusses what you have heard so far without spoiling the rest, and turns moments you mark into recaps and quizzes. It cannot import Kobo or Audible audiobooks, because neither lets the audio leave its own app. It works with podcasts that publish a public feed and with audio you own outright.
FAQ
Is Kobo Plus cheaper than Audible?
On sticker price, yes. Kobo Plus Listen costs $7.99 a month in the US for unlimited listening from its catalog, while Audible Premium costs $14.95 for one credit. But Kobo Plus is a rental, and the books leave when you cancel, while an Audible credit buys a title that stays in your library.
Do you keep Kobo Plus audiobooks after you cancel?
No. Kobo's help center says that once you cancel, you will no longer have access to your Kobo Plus books. Audiobooks bought outright or with a Kobo audiobook credit are different: those stay in your Kobo account after you cancel, and unused credits remain usable for six months.
Do Audible credits expire when you cancel?
Yes. Audible's help center says that if you cancel, you lose access to the included catalog and any unused credits. Titles you already bought with credits stay in your library, so spend your remaining credits before cancelling. Kobo's credit plan keeps unused credits for six months after cancellation.
Can you listen to Audible on a Kobo eReader?
No. Kobo says its audiobooks play only in the Kobo Books app and on eight Kobo eReader models over Bluetooth, and Audible downloads open only in Audible's apps. The two systems do not read each other's files, so an Audible library stays on Audible, and a Kobo library stays on Kobo.
Can you use Kobo or Audible audiobooks with a note-taking app?
No. Kobo audiobooks play only inside Kobo's apps and eReaders, and Audible downloads are copy protected. No outside tool can reach the audio, and that includes Graspd. Podcasts with a public feed and DRM-free files, such as an MP3 or M4B bought from Libro.fm, are the formats outside tools can use.
