Blinkist is worth it if you use it to decide which nonfiction books deserve your time, and if you check the renewal price before you pay. It is a weak buy if you expect to remember what you read in it. On October 6, 2026, the US App Store lists eight different prices for Blinkist subscriptions, from $12.99 a month to $119.99 a year, and Blinkist's own listing promises "science-backed learning for better retention" without naming the science. Both matter more than the star rating, and the reviews ranking for this search cover neither.
What is Blinkist?
Blinkist condenses books, mostly nonfiction, into summaries of about fifteen minutes that you can read or listen to. Its App Store listing counts "9,000+ summaries" and describes them as "the key ideas from the world's top nonfiction and fiction books and podcasts". Around the summaries sit audio Guides and Collections on a topic, personalized recommendations, offline downloads and a Send-to-Kindle button.
The US App Store shows 4.8 stars from 156K ratings and an Editors' Choice badge. Google Play shows 4.6 stars from 177K reviews, more than 10 million downloads and an Editors' Choice badge too. Both checked today. The developer is Blinks Labs GmbH.
What do Blinkist Basic, Premium and Pro include?
The App Store listing names three plans:
| Plan | What you get |
|---|---|
| Basic | One free summary a day, picked by Blinkist's editors |
| Premium | The full library, Guides, recommendations, offline mode, Send-to-Kindle, and a second free account for a friend or family member |
| Pro | Everything in Premium plus Blinkist AI, which summarizes articles, PDFs and videos and answers follow-up questions |
The free plan is not a sampler of your choosing. You read the summary Blinkist picked that day, which tells you about the writing but not whether the books you care about are covered.
One reviewer ranking for this search also describes a Platinum tier with live events and infographics. It is not among the purchases the US App Store lists today, so treat it as a website or regional offer.
How much does Blinkist cost?
There is no single price. Under In-App Purchases, the US App Store lists, on October 6, 2026:
| Subscription | Prices listed |
|---|---|
| Premium, monthly | $12.99, $14.99, $15.99 |
| Premium, yearly | $79.99, $89.99, $99.99, $119.99 |
| Pro | $139.99 |
Two of the entries are labeled only "Premium", so we sorted them by amount. The listing does not say which price you will be offered. The spread is wide: the most expensive yearly Premium costs half again as much as the cheapest.
That explains why the reviews disagree. Of the pages ranking for "blinkist review" and "is blinkist worth it" today, one from January 2025 quotes $99.99 a year, one from August 2025 quotes $79.99, and one from February 2026 quotes $95.27. Each is what one person saw on one day. Your checkout screen, including the renewal line, is the price that applies.
Is there a free trial, and can you get a refund?
The reviews disagree here as well. One says Blinkist offers a 7-day free trial. Another, from February 2026, says there is no free trial at all. Blinkist's own App Store listing does not promise one. Look for the word "trial" on your checkout screen, and if it is there, note the date it converts.
The listing does state the refund route for App Store purchases: "Simply contact Apple Support within the first 14 days to request a refund". So on iPhone the refund goes through Apple, not Blinkist.
To cancel, go through whoever bills you:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Blinkist, Cancel.
- Android: Google Play, your profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, Blinkist, Cancel.
- Bought on blinkist.com: write to support@blinkist.com, the address the listing gives.
Deleting the app cancels nothing. Cancel a day before the renewal, not on the last evening.
Does Blinkist help you remember what you read?
This is the claim worth testing, because Blinkist makes it. Its App Store listing says: "Our summaries are designed using neuroscience-based techniques to help you retain key concepts and ideas more effectively." It does not say which techniques, and the listing cites no study.
Next to that claim sit three numbers: "95% of users read more than before", "91% have developed better habits", "87% already have made positive life changes". The listing gives no method, sample or date for them. Even taken at face value, the first measures how much people read, not how much they keep.
The research on summaries points the other way. The largest review of study techniques rated summarization as low utility, next to highlighting and rereading, and that was for people writing their own summaries. With Blinkist, someone else does the writing, which removes the part that helped. We went through those studies in Blinkist alternatives.
Fluent summaries also make the gap hard to see. A clear fifteen-minute explanation feels like understanding, which is the illusion of competence. A fair test during your first week: finish a summary, close the app, and an hour later explain its main idea out loud. If you can, Blinkist works for you. If you only recognize the idea when you see it again, you have been rereading, not remembering.
None of this makes Blinkist useless. Deciding which book to read next is a real problem, and fifteen minutes is a cheap way to find out that a 300-page book has one idea you already knew.
Who is writing the Blinkist reviews you are reading?
Look at who benefits. Of the review pages ranking for these searches today, one comparison discloses that its author earns affiliate commission from Shortform, a Blinkist competitor, and ranks Blinkist third of three. Two standalone reviews carry affiliate links and say so at the bottom of the page. Much of the rest of the first page is Reddit and Quora threads, where nobody is selling anything but nobody checked a price either.
None of that makes them wrong. It does explain why few of them spend long on renewal prices or on whether the summaries stick.
Our position, for the record: Graspd does not sell summaries and is not a Blinkist replacement, and we earn nothing if you subscribe to Blinkist.
How does Blinkist compare with Headway, Shortform and Audible?
Blinkist has the larger catalog and the narration reviewers tend to prefer. Headway adds more structure, with streaks, flashcards and quizzes; the details are in Blinkist vs Headway and our Headway app review. Shortform goes much deeper per book and costs more, covered in Shortform vs Blinkist.
Who should skip Blinkist?
Skip it if you cannot name five books you would sample in the first month. Skip it if you already know which books you want to read, since the summary then only stands between you and the book. And skip the yearly plan until you have seen the renewal price on your own screen.
If you have used summary apps for a year and cannot recall three ideas from last month, a different summary app will not change that. The longer argument is in why you can't retain information.
Where Graspd fits
Graspd starts where Blinkist stops: with the whole book or podcast episode, not a compression of it. While you listen, an AI companion that knows only what you have heard so far talks it through with you, you set marks on moments worth keeping, and quizzes come from the audio up to your position.
The limit, plainly: Graspd has no library and no summaries, and an eight-hour book takes eight hours. Audible audiobooks cannot be imported because of their DRM. Podcasts work, and so do audiobook files you own outright.
FAQ
Is Blinkist worth it?
As a filter, yes: it is a fast way to sample many nonfiction books and pick the few worth reading in full. As a way to remember those books, no, because reading a summary someone else wrote is one of the weakest study methods measured. Judge the price by what you see at checkout, since the US App Store lists yearly Premium anywhere from $79.99 to $119.99.
How much does Blinkist cost in 2026?
On October 6, 2026, the US App Store lists Blinkist Premium at $12.99, $14.99 or $15.99 a month and at $79.99, $89.99, $99.99 or $119.99 a year, and Blinkist Pro at $139.99. The price you get depends on the offer shown to you.
Is Blinkist free?
Partly. Blinkist Basic gives you one free summary a day, chosen by Blinkist's editors rather than by you, so you cannot use it to check whether the books you care about are covered. The full library of 9,000+ summaries, the Guides and offline mode need Premium.
What is the difference between Blinkist Premium and Pro?
Pro is Premium plus Blinkist AI, which summarizes articles, PDFs and videos you give it and answers follow-up questions about them. If you only want the book summaries, Premium covers that. On the US App Store, Pro is listed at $139.99, above every yearly Premium price.
How do I get a refund from Blinkist?
For App Store purchases, Blinkist's own listing says to contact Apple Support within the first 14 days. Google Play purchases go through Google's refund process. For purchases on blinkist.com, write to support@blinkist.com. Cancel first, so that the subscription does not renew while you wait for an answer.
Does Blinkist work with Audible?
No. Blinkist sells its own summaries and does not open your Audible library. Audible audiobooks carry DRM, so no third-party app can legally import or transcribe them, Graspd included. If you own a book on Audible, a Blinkist summary of the same title is a separate product.
