You probably do not have a memory problem. In most cases the material never got in well enough to come back, because you met it once, passively, while your attention was on something else. A failure at input and a failure at recall feel identical from the inside, which is why general memory advice so often lands wrong. The first useful step is a two minute test that tells you which one you have.
Why can't I retain information?
There are three common causes, and they need different fixes.
It never got encoded. This is the most common one and the least discussed. In a set of experiments by Craik and colleagues, dividing attention while people were taking material in produced large drops in later memory. Dividing attention while they were trying to recall it produced small drops or none. The material in those experiments was presented by ear. Where you were and what else you were doing when the idea arrived matters more than what you do afterwards.
You recognized it instead of recalling it. Rereading a chapter or replaying an episode makes the sentences feel familiar. Familiarity is cheap, and it is not the same as being able to produce the idea when nothing is in front of you. Most people who say they cannot retain information have been measuring themselves with recognition, which always flatters.
You only met it once. Even well encoded material fades if you never return to it. A review by Cepeda and colleagues of distributed practice found that spreading contact with material over time supports recall better than packing it together.
One honest note before the fixes. Sleep loss, chronic stress, illness, medication and some clinical conditions all affect memory, and no study method compensates for them. If the change was sudden, if it reaches things you have known for years, or if people around you noticed before you did, that is a question for a doctor rather than for a note system.
The two minute test
Take something you took in yesterday. A chapter, a lecture, an episode. Close the book, the tab and the app. Set a timer for two minutes and write what it claimed on a blank page, in your own words.
The result tells you which cause is yours.
- A blank page, or only the topic. You know you listened to something about pricing, and nothing else arrives. The material was never encoded. Work on the input.
- Fragments that fill in once you see a keyword. It is in there, and the path to it is weak. Work on retrieval.
- A good answer today, and nothing left in a month. Encoding and retrieval are fine. You need a second and third contact.
The reason to run it is that the first and second groups need almost opposite advice, and from the inside they feel the same. Anyone can tell you they forget things. Very few people can say whether the material was ever there.
What to change if nothing comes back
The work happens in the seconds around the idea, not in the evening.
The cheapest version is one question, asked at the moment. Not a summary, not a highlight. A question in your own words about the thing you just heard: why would that be true, where have I seen this fail, what would this change for me. Asking it is enough to move the material from something you were exposed to into something you did something with.
What does not work is more exposure. Rereading and replaying are the two habits that feel most like studying and leave the least behind. If you finish a chapter and immediately reread it, you have spent the time buying familiarity.
Divided attention is often not negotiable. If your input arrives through headphones while you are driving or cooking, you cannot solve it by paying more attention to the audio. What you can do is make capturing a moment cost almost nothing, so the thought survives the drive. That is a different problem from note taking, and it has its own solutions.
What to change if it is on the tip of your tongue
Stop looking at the answer and try to produce it first.
Retrieval practice is the best evidenced technique on this list. Roediger and Karpicke found that taking a test on material supported long term retention better than studying it again for the same amount of time, and a later randomized trial by Larsen, Butler and Roediger found the same pattern with repeated testing.
The uncomfortable part is the point. When you almost have something and cannot quite get it, that effort is what strengthens the path. Checking the source too early removes the useful part of the exercise, so check afterwards.
Explaining an idea to another person is the same mechanism wearing different clothes. You are producing the material from memory, in your own words, with immediate feedback when you stall. If nobody is available, write four sentences to an imaginary reader who has not read the book.
What to change if it fades after a few weeks
Plan the second contact, not a system.
Once the material is in, the only thing missing is meeting it again after a gap of days rather than minutes. This does not require a review app or a schedule. One question in the car on Thursday about what you listened to on Monday does the job. What matters is the gap and the attempt, not the tooling around them.
Do memory palaces and mind maps work?
They work for a narrower set of material than the popular lists suggest.
A memory palace is strong for ordered, arbitrary material: a sequence of names, a list you must reproduce exactly. Nonfiction rarely gives you that. The thing you want from a book is usually an argument, a distinction or a worked example, and those do not sit well on pegs in a room.
Mind maps are a note format. There is little evidence that the format itself improves retention, and quite a lot that retrieval practice does. If you have ten minutes a week to spend on this, spend them on trying to produce ideas from memory rather than on rebuilding your notes.
The thirteen tip articles are not wrong so much as flat. They present interleaving, meditation, association, teaching and self testing as equal options. They are not equal. Retrieval practice and spacing carry the evidence, and most of the rest are ways of getting yourself to do those two things.
Why the usual advice fails if you learn by listening
Almost every article on this topic assumes you are at a desk.
Take notes actively. Use the Cornell method. Pause and summarize each section. All of that is reasonable for a student with a notebook, and none of it survives contact with someone whose main input is a podcast on the drive to work or an audiobook while the kitchen is being cleaned. The material arrives at exactly the moment you cannot write anything down.
For audio the sequence has to be shorter. Mark the moment while it happens, add one sentence in your own words when you next have a free hand, and try to produce the idea later without replaying the episode. What actually helps, in order
- Ask one question at the moment the idea arrives.
- Capture the moment cheaply, before deciding whether it was important.
- Try to produce the idea later from memory.
- Check the source only after the attempt, never before.
- Meet the material again after a few days.
- Let go of the parts you will never use.
The order matters more than the completeness. Step one is where most of the loss happens, and it is where almost none of the advice is aimed.

FAQ
Why can't I retain information I just read or heard?
Usually because it was never encoded. Material taken in passively, with your attention divided, leaves a weak trace even when it felt clear at the time. The test is to close the source and try to write the claim in your own words. A blank page points at input, not at your memory.
Is poor retention a memory problem or an attention problem?
Far more often attention, specifically attention at the moment the material arrives. Research on divided attention shows large losses when attention is split during encoding and much smaller losses when it is split during recall. That is why the fix belongs at input rather than in a review routine afterwards.
Does rereading or replaying help?
Very little, relative to the time it costs. Rereading increases familiarity, which makes material feel known without making it available when you need it. Replacing one reread with one attempt to recall the same material from memory is the single highest value swap most people can make.
How long does it take to notice a difference?
You can measure it within a week. Run the two minute test on something you took in yesterday, apply one change, then run the same test seven days later on new material. The comparison is rough but honest, and it beats guessing whether a new note system is working.
Can you retain information from podcasts and audiobooks?
Yes, but not by listening harder. Audio arrives while your hands are busy, so the capture has to be nearly free and the processing has to happen later. Marking moments while listening and answering questions about them afterwards keeps the encoding and retrieval steps that listening alone skips.
